The Ultimate Abercrombie Jeans Guide – trying on the most popular styles!

Abercrombie Jeans are a staple in my wardrobe!

No matter what brand of denim I try, I always ask myself “are these better than my Abercrombie jeans?”. The answer has been “no” for quite some time now.

Abercrombie jeans just fit so well and they always nail the colors, distressing and styles!

With that being said, it can be a little overwhelming and difficult to keep up with all of the trendy jean styles these days.

I never realized there could be so many variations of a “straight leg” jean, but here we are: 90s straight, 90s relaxed, loose fit, mom fit, ankle straight… ahhh

I have ALWAYS wanted to create this post and I am so excited to do so 🙂

My Sizing Reference:

I am 5’3 and usually a 2/4, Xsmall/small and always a 26 in abercrombie jeans. I usually get the short length, but with flares I get “regular” so I can wear them with heeled booties.

How jeans typically fit me: I am somewhere in-between being pear and hourglass shaped. I have short “dollhouse” legs and my thighs are thicker than the rest of my legs, so jeans usually look/fit differently on me than the advertised model photo.

“Curve love” was perfect when I was postpartum as it gives a little more room in the upper part of the jeans. However, I usually opt for the “classic” fit 26 short.

The Ultimate Abercrombie Jeans Guide

Abercrombie Ultra High Rise 90’s “Straight” Jeans

The Abercrombie Ultra High Rise 90s Straight Jean are definitely the most popular –and for a good reason! They have the highest rise, a full length leg and a flattering vintage 90’s fit.

They are fitted at the bum and slowly taper down to a straight leg fit. If you are just venturing away from skinny jeans, this may be the safest “trendy” jean to try. I do not feel they are overly baggy at all.

These are the perfect “everything” jeans. They look 90s vintage and casual with sneakers and a sweatshirt. However, they can also look trendy and chic with a pair of heels and a sleek bodysuit.

I have actually repurchased this exact pair of jeans twice! The first time being when I was postpartum and in that “I don’t know what to wear with my new post-baby body” era. I loved them so much, I repurchased my regular size once I lost the baby weight.

90s Straight Jeans Review:

  • Thick, true denim feel with a tiny bit of stretch
  • Criss-cross waistband option, snatches your waistline!
  • Fitted bum, slightly straight fit in the thighs and a full straight fit down to the ankles.
  • Waist feels more cinched than some of Abercrombie’s other jeans
  • Wearing my normal 26 short. Length barely misses the ground.
  • Color range, the most options to choose from!
  • Flattering? 10/10 These full length jeans make your legs look long, the criss-cross waist gives you an instant hourglass shape and the ultra high rise + fitted top gives the signature 90s jean booty.

Abercrombie’s High Rise 90’s “Relaxed” Jeans

The High Rise 90’s “Relaxed” Jeans have the same vibe as the the 90’s “straight” jeans, but a little more, well, relaxed.

They are fitted at the bum and taper down to a cool and casual relaxed leg opening. They may feel a little drastic if you are used to skinny jeans, but give it time! These are the perfect cozy fall outfit jean: oversized knit sweaters, sweatshirts, sneakers, boots… love!

I would wear these as an everyday all season jean as well. I especially love this light grey wash with this cozy knit sweater and these light colored boots.

90’s Relaxed Jeans Review:

  • Thick, true denim feel with a tiny bit of stretch
  • Waist feels more cinched than some of Abercrombie’s other jeans
  • Fitted bum, slightly relaxed thighs and tapers down to a full relaxed leg opening.
  • Wearing my normal 26 short. Length barely misses the ground.
  • Color range, the most options to choose from!
  • Flattering? 8/10. I felt confident in these jeans, but I don’t feel the “wow” factor unless I wear heels. They have a very cozy, lived in “soft” look to them that I love. I will wear these with cozy sweaters and uggs all winter! Give me a gingerbread latte, a rainy day and I am a happy girl.

90s Straight Vs. 90s Relaxed?

To be honest, I had to try both pairs on back-to-back multiple times to really feel a difference. They are SO similar. Obviously, the “straight” fit is a little more slim than the “relaxed”, but not by much in my opinion.

I do have thicker thighs in comparison to the rest of my legs, so that could affect the fit of both pairs. However on me, both jeans just gave me cool 90s relaxed denim vibes.

I would personally choose the 90s straight jeans for an everyday jean, since it is less baggy below the knees.

Also, if you are someone who is used to wearing mom jeans and skinny jeans, the 90s straight jeans will feel less drastic.

However, if you are wanting the trendy, baggy jean look without losing the flattery of a well-fitting pair of jeans, then the 90s Relaxed are perfect for you! They definitely gave me the “cool 90s jeans” look, but still fit well in the hips and thighs. No saggy bottoms in either of these jeans!

Abercrombie’s High Rise “Loose” Jeans

Abercrombie’s High Rise “Loose” Jeans became an unexpected favorite of mine! I 100% thought I would hate how they look on my short legs, but I literally LOVE them.

These are as if you found the perfect vintage late 90s/2000s baggy pair of jeans. They have the signature 90s flattering fit in the booty and a relaxed leg from the thigh all the way to the ankle opening.

They give me polished denim trouser vibes when paired with a heel, but then they also look totally relaxed and cool when paired with sneakers.

I freaking love them.

High Rise Loose Jeans Review

  • Medium thick true denim feel holds you in, no stretch
  • Button sits above belly button and waistline feels more cinched than some of the other jeans
  • Fitted bum, relaxed fit from thighs to ankles
  • Wearing my normal 26 short. Length barely misses the ground.
  • Ankle opening is wider than the 90’s relaxed, but not as wide as the flares.
  • Flattering? 100/10. I may just be excited because I initially thought these would look awful on my body type (5’3 with “dollhouse” legs) but I felt GOOD in these jeans.

Abercrombie’s Ultra High Rise “Ankle Straight” Jeans

The Ultra High Rise Ankle Straight Jeans are hands down my most worn pair of jeans! The denim is a little more lightweight in comparison to their 90’s relaxed & straight jeans which makes these the perfect warm weather jeans.

The cropped ankle is also perfect for sandals and flats, however do wear these in the fall with booties as well.

These jeans sit above my belly button and are fitted throughout the bum and thighs. At the knees, they begin to loosen up to a straight fit all the way to the ankle. I would say the ankle has a tiny bit of a flare which I find flattering!

If you are venturing away from skinny jeans, the Ultra High Rise “Ankle Straight” Jeans are another good, easy to wear option!

Ultra High Rise Ankle Straight Jeans Review:

  • Lightweight, soft denim feel. Hint of stretch.
  • Plenty of distressed options, which is sometimes fun
  • Fitted bum, fitted thighs and straight fit from knees to ankles.
  • Wearing my normal 26 short, ankle is cropped
  • Ankle opening is a little more wide than the “mom” jeans.
  • Flattering? 10/10 These are my most worn pair and I think it’s due to them being so figure flattering and easy to style.

Abercrombie’s High Rise “Mom” Jeans

Abercrombie’s “Mom” Jeans are THE gateway jeans for anyone wanting stay in their skinny jean comfort zone but also try something new. They have a similar fit to their skinny jeans, but a bit more relaxed and modern looking (which is ironic, because they are supposed to be mom’s jeans…)

I would ultimately describe these as a relaxed fitting, lightly cropped skinny jean. They have the flattering high rise, fitted throughout the bum and thighs, then they taper ever-so-slightly to a straight leg from the knees to the ankle.

The ankle is cropped, which showcases and flatters whatever shoes you are wearing.

I find the cropped style to be another great warm weather jean. However, they also look super cute in the fall paired with oversized sweaters and booties too!

Abercrombie Mom Jeans Review:

  • Lightweight, soft denim feel. Hint of stretch
  • Timeless design, but more modern than a skinny jean
  • Fitted bum, fitted thighs and straight fit from knees to ankles.
  • Wearing my normal 26 short, ankle is cropped
  • Ankle opening is a little less wide than the “ankle straight” jeans.
  • Flattering? 10/10 These have become a classic pair of jeans for me! I really love the black & grey wash.

Abercrombie Ankle Straight Vs. Mom Jeans?

I would personally choose the Ultra High Rise Ankle Straight jeans over the Mom Jeans. They are very similar, but I find the Ankle Straight jeans to be a bit more stylish and flattering on me.

The Ankle Straight jeans have the ultra high rise and a cute, slightly flared, cropped ankle.

The ultra high rise is not much higher than abercrombie’s normal high rise (at least on my frame), but it makes such a difference in accentuating your body’s natural shape!

To me, the Mom Jeans are just a little less interesting if that makes sense? They are SO similar and wonderful, but I just prefer the ankle straight. However, I do LOVE this black wash in the Mom Jeans. They are a must have denim shade!

Abercrombie High Rise “Dad” Jeans

Just pop on a pair of New Balance Sneakers, an oversized t-shirt, a baseball cap and you will have yourself an old fashioned 90s dad-fit.

I would describe Abercrombie’s Dad Jeans as an almost high rise, loose fitting straight leg jean. They have a form fitting upper half with a straight fitting knee area down to the ankle.

I don’t know if it is just my body type, but these dad jeans did not fit me the way I thought “dad” jeans would fit. They were quite fitted until the knees. These were very much just a straight leg jean on me.

Dad Jeans Review:

Looks like the Dad Jeans style has been discontinued!

  • Lightweight true denim feel. There is stretch, but it’s almost unnoticeable
  • “high rise” but the button sits below my belly button. They felt like a mid-rise.
  • Fitted bum, fitted highs and tapers down to a straight leg fit to the ankle.
  • Wearing my normal 26 short. Length hits right at the ankle.
  • Currently on clearance, so I am not sure if the “dad” jeans are going away.
  • Flattering? 5/10. I felt kind of frumpy in these jeans! The fit was so different from what I am used to with Abercrombie jeans. The rise was too low for my liking and they kind of gave me pancake booty vibes too.

Abercrombie Mom Jeans vs. Dad Jeans?

I did not like how the Dad Jeans fit on my body at all. I did get masculine vibes, but not in a cool tomboy baggy jean kind of way. I just felt like I was wearing a bland mid-rise straight leg jean.

Maybe they would have given me cool dad vibes if I sized up and got the regular length to roll at the ankles, but I am just not a fan.

Sorry, Dad…Mom’s jeans are just better.

Abercrombie Ultra High Rise “Stretch Flare” Jeans

The Ultra High Rise Ankle Straight Jeans are a good staple pair of flares! These are not the spandex denim flares you got from Kohls as a kid (remember the glittery jeans though?!)

Not gonna lie, these jeans did not look like they would fit at first. The stretch is elite. They fit perfectly and comfortably too.

The button sits above my belly button and is form fitting until they hit my knees. They slowly taper down to a full on flare below the ankle.

I am always a 26 short in Abercrombie denim, but I opted for a 26 regular in these flares. I only wear flares with a heel and I wanted the extra length to cover whatever heels/boots I wear. I typically wear a 3 inch heel with booties, and the flare denim length was perfect!

The description mentions these jeans having “built in stretch”, but I do not feel that they have that cheap “spandex” denim stretch at all. It is the right amount to get the smoothening fit without broadcasting your every flaw.

Abercrombie Stretch Flare Jeans Review

  • Lightweight, quality stretchy denim feel
  • Denim fabric is body smoothening
  • Form fitting until the knees where it begins to flare out
  • Wearing my normal 26, but in a regular length for heels/boots.
  • The perfect staple flare jeans
  • Flattering? 10/10. Flare jeans have such a flattering shape in general! These are a great pair of flares. The material holds you in, but feels lightweight.

Abercrombie High Rise “Vintage Flare” Jeans

The High Rise Vintage Flare Jeans are one of my favorite pairs of flares to wear!

It is hard to find a pair of flare jeans that actually feels like true denim and not the typical stretchy denim that most flares have. These definitely meet the mark with the high quality vintage denim fabric.

They pretty much look like they came from the wardrobe of That 70’s show and I’m here for it! There is a hint of stretch to help these mold to your body shape, but overall these feel structured and like true denim.

I personally love the raw hemline in this dark wash, because my flares always get a little rough at the bottom from wearing out and about.

These are a heavier denim than the Stretch Flares, but I actually find that they hold you in better because of it.

Abercrombie Vintage Flare Jeans Review:

  • Somewhat thick, vintage denim feel. Hint of stretch, but not noticeably stretchy
  • Thicker denim holds you in better than the “Stretch Flares” imo
  • Form fitting until the knees where it begins to flare out
  • Wearing my normal 26, but in the “regular” length for heels/boots.
  • The perfect vintage flares
  • Flattering? 100/10! These are THE flare jeans. I always feel that my outfits look cool yet polished with these thicker denim flares. The regular length + heeled booties gives this otherwise short girly some legggs!

Abercrombie Stretch Flare Jeans Vs. Vintage Flare Jeans?

Both flares are wonderful, but I would personally choose the High Rise Vintage Flare Jeans over the Ultra High Rise Stretch Flare.

The Vintage Flare Jeans have a thicker true denim feel which just looks and feels more polished in my opinion. I also feel the thickness of the Vintage Flares held me in more than the stretchy denim flares.

It’s personally preference and you can’t go wrong with either! I just love the overall feel of the Vintage Flare Jeans more.

Abercrombie High Rise “Skinny” Jeans

I am team “wear whatever makes you happy despite what people say is or is not trending”. With that being said, these High Rise Skinny Jeans will always be some of my favorite jeans!

I have had this pair since 2019 (maybe even 2018?), and they have held up beautifully! (one of the many reasons why I love Abercrombie Denim). They don’t sell this exact distressed design anymore, but there are some similar styles.

While these may be the “millennial staple”, I do consider Abercrombie’s skinny jeans to be a bit more of a relaxed skinny jean than a “glued to your leg” skinny jean or jegging.

They are slimming without sticking to every flaw on your legs.

Abercrombie Straight Jeans Review:

  • Lightweight denim feel with a hint of stretch
  • High Rise, button hits right at my belly button
  • Fitted at the bum and throughout the entire leg to the ankle
  • Wearing my normal 26 short, length hits just below the ankle
  • Flattering? 100/10. There is a reason why skinny jeans were popular for SO long! They are slimming, booty flattering and give your body an hourglass shape. Abercrombie makes my favorite pair of skinny jeans! Skinny jeans will be back…don’t you worry 😉
