With the holiday season in full swing, our homes feel extra festive strung head to toe in lights and every open space decked in holiday decorations. When the season ends, it can be a little sad seeing all the decorations go! However, it’s easy to transition from over-the-top holiday decor to a more understated look that will carry your space through the winter. Think cozy textures, lush greenery and warming colors to evoke the perfect vibes for hot cocoa by the fire after a day playing out in the snow. Check out my latest interview with Wayfair to see how I transition from holiday to winter decor!
WINTER DECOR TRANSITION: Q&A with Lori of Guitar and Lace
Wayfair: How do you incorporate winter decor into your space without it feeling too “holiday”?
Lori: Once Christmas is over, I slowly begin to feel overwhelmed by all of the festive holiday decor. I always want to start the new year with a clean slate at home, but I am also not quite ready to let go of the coziness of winter either! Therefore, I like to keep the cozy textures and add in a neutral color palette when transitioning into a more wintry home.
I personally love the glow of a Christmas Tree for winter, so I will take off all of the decorations and just leave the tree bare with warm white lights. Our tree usually stays up until the week after New Years Day.
All of my colorful festive throw pillows and blankets are switched out with neutral knits and faux fur throw blankets and pillows. Tabletop trees and holiday garland is all stored away and replaced with greenery and more minimalistic decor.
It almost feels like my home can breathe again! However, the continued use of wintry textures still makes everything feel cozy!
Wayfair: Are there any pieces you reuse from your holiday decor collection?
Lori: I am a huge lover of ambience lighting at home. For the holidays, we have the Christmas Tree lights as well as many LED candles and fairy lights throughout the home. These lights tend to be the last of the holiday decor to be taken down.
Our house gets minimal natural lighting during the winter months, so the candle lit ambience is a must! I love the look of LED taper candles lined up on our fireplace mantle.
Wayfair: What inspires your winter decor? i.e. a cozy log cabin decked in plaid, or maybe an icy blue winter wonderland?
Lori: The symbolic meaning behind winter always inspires my lifestyle and decor at home! Winter is nature’s clean slate, so naturally I want my home to feel refreshed yet cozy. Neutral colors, minimal decor pieces and uplifting lighting gets me through the winter glum.
My living room still has the cozy warmth of soft throw blankets and faux fur throw pillows, but the colors are muted and neutral. All thematic holiday decor and garland has been removed from my console tables and replaced with just a few simple decor pieces: vintage books, winter scented candles and a small table lamp.
Our fireplace is decorated with a simple faux fur throw blanket, birch logs and LED candles.
