You know those liminal space memes with photos of abandoned malls, hallways and empty basement pools? That is pretty much the vibe my small laundry has always given me. The fluorescent light fixture even has the quintessential creepy buzzing sound.
I put off redecorating the laundry room simply because it sits at the end of my home with a door I can shut. However, I have just felt so inspired and ready to finish the rest of the spaces in my home!
Laundry Room makeover – Phase One plan
When starting a simple room makeover, I always try to start with the biggest issues and eyesores. For me, the sketchy fluorescent light fixture is an obvious issue…and ultimate eyesore.
Next, the flooring just feels outdated with the thick dark grout lines. New flooring is not in my immediate future, so I will have to find a quick fix. I love a good affordable quick fix!
Lastly, adding a bit of cozy decor is a quick and easy way to make the room feel fresh.
Off to Lowe’s I go!
Products used in this mini laundry room makeover:
- Bowen Flush Mount Light by Allen + Roth
- LED bulbs 60W equivalent “soft white”
- Grout Refresh Paint & Sealer “biscuit”
- Allen + Roth accent rug “sapphire petals”
Allen + Roth Bowen Light Fixture

Nothing feels cozy and flattering under bright white fluorescent lights. It really just makes the space feel greenish and dingy. However, I didn’t want to sacrifice having a well lit laundry room either.
I found the perfect light fixture for my laundry room! The Bowen Flush Mount Light by Allen + Roth is both gorgeous and practical. The modern yet classic gold finish and seeded glass definitely take decades off my 90s builder grade laundry room. The light is also dimmable!
I used these exact LED bulbs in soft white and they are the perfect warmth and brightness. They are 60W equivalent and have a white filament (instead of yellow) which is appreciated since the bulbs are visable within the glass fixture.
The light fixture changed everything! To be honest, I didn’t even realize the wall color was not an olive greenish brown shade… lighting changes everything.

Grout Refresh Paint & Sealer

One of my favorite ways to instantly enhance outdated tile floors is by painting/sealing the grout. It is affordable, relatively easy and SO impactful.
After a deep cleaning of the tiles and grout (vacuum, mop, scrub, dry for a day…and vacuum again) I went to work. This Grout Refresh Paint & Sealer was a breeze to use. The applicator made it super easy to gently apply down the grout lines. I used the color “Biscuit” which is a creamy light beige.

Since my grout lines are thick and a bit rigid, I used a small craft paint brush to gently fill in all the spots. However, if you have thinner grout lines you could simply just gently squeeze the bottle while you trace down your grout lines.
Painting the grout absolutely changed the room. The flooring looks way more cohesive with the room. The space just feels clean and more welcoming!

Simple Decor
A little cozy decor goes a long way in a small space! To me, the most noticeable piece of decor in a room is a rug.
This Allen + Roth accent rug is the perfect choice to add a bit of color and life into my revived laundry room. It is a part of their STAINMASTER rug line, which is a huge plus. My rug is the “sapphire petals” colorway.

Phase 1 Before & After

This was such a simple yet impactful laundry room mini makeover! I am still amazed with how much a new light fixture transformed the space. This small laundry room started as a cold dismal space and transformed into a warmer room that feels a bit more like home.
Looking ahead
This simple mini makeover made all the difference to my laundry room, however I cannot wait to really beautify the space. After browsing on Lowe’s website for inspiration, I landed on the perfect wallpaper.
With that being said, my next project home project will be tackling peel and stick wallpaper and perhaps a new coat of paint on the doors, ceiling & trim. Stay tuned!
