Rose Garden Lookbook: all of my beautiful Yellow Roses!
It has taken me some time to warm up to Yellow Roses. Living in Phoenix, most of our standard “desert flowers” are yellow. Yellow Lantana, Yellow Bells, Yellow Wildflowers… yellow is everywhere. When I started my rose garden, I really just wanted colors that you don’t see often in the desert.
After planting a few of my first yellow roses, I quickly fell in love with how bright and happy the yellow blooms look against the green foliage! It also helped that most yellow roses love the heat and the blooms last for days even during our late spring heat waves.
Now I am a fan of yellow roses! This year, my now two year old is loving the garden. He loves watering, looking for bugs and telling me all the colors he sees. His favorite color?! Yellow! Or, as he would shout anytime he sees his favorite color: YEYYOW!!! For this reason alone, I have went ahead and planted one more yellow rose in my garden (golden celebration)

Rose Garden Lookbook: all of my beautiful Yellow Roses!
Yellow roses represent happiness, friendship and encouragement. I have found that most yellow roses are really heat tolerant with long lasting blooms.
I will be sharing a series of all of the different colored roses that I grow in my garden. Today, I am sharing all of the shades of yellow roses that I grow!
Marilyn Monroe – Creamy Yellow Roses
Named after one of the most famous Hollywood Actresses, the Marilyn Monroe rose is simply stunning! The blooms begin as a bright blonde yellow color and slowly mature to a pale creamy apricot as they open up.
This rose has quickly become one of my favorite roses in my garden! The blooms are HUGE, perfectly rose shaped, peaches & lemons fragrance and they have such a delicate color compared to the rest of my garden.
These blooms are anything but delicate though! My Marilyn Monroe rose sits in full sun from about 7am-4pm. These blooms last for days without any wilting, crisping or dramatic color fade. The strength of these petals are thick and hardy.
It is important to note that rose colors tend to vary in hot temperatures. This rose is technically an apricot rose. For me in Phoenix, it starts off as a creamy golden yellow shade and slowly fades to a creamy apricot color.
Marilyn Monroe Rose Growth Habits:
- Blooms: Large, perfectly shaped creamy yellow rose, fades to a pale cream color.
- Growth Style: Hybrid tea rose, grows tall with one large bloom per stem
- Height: up to 6 feet
- Width: up to 4 feet
- Fragrance: moderate rose scent
- Growing Zones: 6-10
- Heat Tolerance: Very! one of my most long lasting blooms in Phoenix, Az
- Disease Tolerance: I haven’t had any issues
Teasing Georgia – Buttery Yellow Climbing Rose
Teasing Georgia was one of the first yellow roses I planted in my garden! As I mentioned earlier, I avoided yellow roses at first because yellow flowers are already so common in the desert. However, I fell in love with the buttery golden yellow color of this David Austin Rose!
The blooms begin as large ruffled buttery yellow blooms and slowly fade to the most beautiful pale creamy yellow.
I have this climbing rose in a pot on my patio. It is currently being trained to climb up the patio column. This was a strategic choice since the blooms are super fragrant! I love sitting on the patio on a breezy mid morning with the smell of roses.
Teasing Georgia is one of David Austin’s most heat tolerant roses. I’ve noticed that most pure yellow roses seem to do well in our desert sun. I’ve also noticed that most of my David Austin Roses do not bloom until later in the spring. I am not sure if this is normal, but they all seem to bloom mostly May-June and a little bit in the fall here in zone 9B Phoenix, Arizona.
Teasing Georgia Growth Habits:
- Blooms: Large Buttery Yellow, ruffled & cupped blooms
- Growth Style: Climbing Rose
- Height: up to 12 feet
- Width: up to 5 feet
- Fragrance: very strong sweet tea rose fragrance
- Growing Zones: 5-11
- Heat Tolerance: does well in Phoenix! Blooms do wilt after a few days of intense heat
- Disease Resistance: very disease resistant for me!
Lady Banks – Rambling Yellow Roses
Did you know the world’s largest rose plant is here in Arizona?! It is actually a Lady Banks that was planted in 1885 and covers about 9,000 square feet. We love an Arizona rose moment!
My Lady Banks roses are definitely not that big, but they are vigorous growers that LOVE the desert heat! They are often labeled as a climbing rose, but I consider them more to be a rambler rose. The blooms are tiny, but they cover most of the surface of each stem and they only bloom once a year. For me, this is usually sometime in April. I own a buttery yellow lady banks, but they also come in white!
This rose also does not have any thorns, which makes them easy to train and deal with since they do grow wildly out of control at times. This is the perfect rose to have growing up a pergola, patio column, fence or any other place you need foliage and color.
Lady Banks Yellow Roses Growth Habits:
- Blooms: clusters of tiny pure yellow blooms.
- Growth Style: Rambling Rose, no thorns, grows tons of flexible canes, only blooms once a year during mid spring
- Height: up to 20 feet
- Width: 5 feet
- Fragrance: barely there rose scent
- Growing Zones: 6-9
- Heat Tolerance: incredibly drought tolerant and loves the heat!
- Disease Resistance: very disease resistant
Moonlight in Paris – Blush & Yellow Roses
Moonlight in Paris is such a romantic rose! She is typically a light pink-apricot rose with a golden center, but the heat of Arizona brings out more of a blush pink , white and yellow colorway. However, the perfectly cupped and pillowy blooms are stunning no matter what.
This is one of my more delicate roses in my garden. I originally had her in a spot that received full morning and early afternoon sun and she struggled. While the foliage still looked very healthy, every bloom would wilt by the afternoon. I rarely got to see a true bloom.
Once I moved her to a medium sized pot in a more shaded area (that still receives morning sun) she began to thrive! I can’t wait to see more growth and blooms this spring and early summer.
While this rose is definitely not heat tolerant, it does happen to be very disease resistant!
Moonlight in Paris Growth Habits:
- Blooms: large cupped, blush pink with a yellow “moonlight” center
- Growth Style: beautiful floribunda shrub form! multiple blooms per stem
- Height: 4 feet
- Width: 4 feet
- Fragrance: Moderate Fruity & Rose scent
- Growing Zones: 6-9
- Heat Tolerance: does not love our desert sun, but does well in a shaded area that receives morning sun!
- Disease Resistance: very disease resistant!
South Africa Rose – Yellow/Orange Roses
The South Africa Rose is known for it’s extreme heat tolerance, gorgeous amber colored petals and constant healthy appearance. I have this rose in the sunniest part of my yard, and she is always thriving!
This rose starts out as a rich, amber-orange color. As the blooms mature, they fade to more of a yellowish apricot color. Then again, my South Africa rose sits in full unwavering desert sun from sunrise to sunset which definitely contributes to the color fading. However, it’s even more impressive to me that the petals do not wilt or crisp as most roses do in full hot sun.
Out of all of my roses, the South Africa rose is easily my most low maintenance, heat tolerant and sturdy blooming rose. These blooms last for over a week on the shrub as well as in a vase! I have not picked up much of a fragrance from my South Africa Rose, but it is also under two years old.
South Africa Rose Growth Habits:
- Blooms: Large ruffled amber yellow/orange petals
- Growth Style: Grandiflora, multiple blooms per stem
- Height: 5 feet
- Width: 4 feet
- Fragrance: Supposedly very fragrant, but mine has a very moderate rose scent
- Growing Zones: 5-10
- Heat Tolerance: a total beast of a rose. Does not wilt in full desert sun. Blooms last for over a week for me. No wilting or fading.
- Disease Resistance: very healthy rose!
Golden Celebration – Golden Yellow Roses
The Golden Celebration Rose is my most recently purchased rose! In fact, this is the first and only bloom I have seen, so it is still quite young.
I purchased this rose for my two-year-old sun who LOVES the color yellow. He loves working in the flower garden with me, so it was only natural that he should have his very own rose.
While I have not had much time to learn how this rose performs in my garden, I can say that he has been handling our random spring heat waves like a gold medal winning champ!
From the one bloom I have received so far, I can say that this rose is very fragrant! Typically, it takes a good feed and a few bloom cycles to see the full potential of fragrance, color and bloom size, however this little champ was already showing off!
If you are local to Phoenix, Berridge Nursery carries a huge selection of roses including David Austin roses! Berridge is pretty much my Disneyland.
Golden Celebration Rose Growth Habits:
- Blooms: large, cupped pure golden yellow blooms
- Growth Style: shrub style rose
- Height: 4 feet
- Width: 4 feet
- Fragrance: very fragrant! smells fruity to me
- Growing Zones: 5-11
- Heat Tolerance: does well in Phoenix, Az so far!
- Disease Tolerance: very disease tolerant! David Austin Roses are known for this.
Peace Rose – Pink, cream & Yellow Rose
The Peace Rose was introduced at the end of World War II and was dedicated as “The Peace Rose” on the day Berlin fell on April 29th, 1945. With its roots in history (see what I did there hehe) The Peace Rose has become one of the most famous and popular rose varieties!
This hybrid tea rose always looks too perfect to even be real! With huge 5-6 blooms, perfectly painted petals and strong floral fragrance, it is a must have rose if you can fit it into your garden space! This particular coloring isn’t something I normally go for, but once I saw it in person I knew I needed to have one for myself.
In general, this rose does well in my Phoenix Arizona rose garden. However, the blooms do tend to wilt after a few days of hot spring sun. I think if this were planted in a spot that received afternoon shade, it would be more long lasting.
Peace Rose Growth Habits:
- Blooms: large white, pink and yellow blooms. Perfect rose shape!
- Growth Style: Hybrid Tea rose, grows leggy as most hybrid tea roses do. One bloom per stem.
- Height: 4 feet
- Width: 3 feet
- Fragrance: Strong rose fragrance
- Growing Zones: 5-10
- Heat Tolerance: does very well in Phoenix, Az! Blooms wilt after a few days of full sun
- Disease Resistance: very disease resistant!
