How to Style Throw Pillows for a Collected Modern Look
Hello Everyone! 🙂
It’s been feeling more and more like springtime and I am beyond ready to open all the windows up, make a cup of lemon tea and pin all the home decor pins on Pinterest!
One of my favorite ways to do a “spring home refresh” is to add little affordable home decor pieces throughout my home.
Maybe it’s a vintage vase from the thrift store filled with Trader Joe’s flowers. Or, changing out my Pura Home fragrances to something citrus or floral. (The Sugared Lemon scent is my favorite right now!)
My favorite kind of home decor, you ask?! Throw Pillows.
I LOVE a good mix and match throw pillow situation. I used to order throw pillows based off of similar colors only to be disappointed with how bland everything looked inside my home.
Now, I have a method to my throw pillow madness: Solid + Textures + Pattern. It never fails! I am going to share a few examples below with some stunning (and affordable) throw pillows.
Throw Pillow Combinations
Throw Pillow Ideas – Spring Florals, Plaid & Stripes
Floral Pattern + Plaid + Stripes
- Floral Pattern – Dainty florals, leaves/vines, floral block pattern
- Plaid – large scale plaid, small scale plaid, gingham
- Stripes – Vertical or Horizontal lines, whether printed, embroidered or textures. Dainty pinstripes, summery block stripes, detailed ticking stripes
I love a complete mix of patterns and textures! Florals, stripes and plaid can be paired with a texture like velvet, or why not style them all together?!
Mix dainty, understated patterns with large bold patterns.
Styling Throw Pillows – Floral Design & Plaid Pillows
Floral Pattern + Plaid + Solid and/or Texture Throw Pillows
- Floral Pattern – Dainty florals, leaves/vines, floral block pattern
- Plaid – large scale plaid, small scale plaid, gingham
- Solid/Texture – Appears to be mainly one color. Can have hints of texture, embroidery, thick stitching, leather or velvet fabrics.
I love a good floral & plaid pillow combo! Florals make plaid appear less autumnal which is great for year around decor! Likewise, plaid can help make florals feel less springy.
One of the easiest ways to achieve a cohesive throw pillow combo is to mix a plaid and a floral! The additional solid/texture pillow is really optional, but it does help to balance out all the patterns.
Throw Pillow Combinations – Solid, Pattern & Texture
Solid + Pattern + Texture Throw Pillows
- Solid – Appears to be mostly one color. Minimal texture within the fabric.
- Patterns – Floral designs, stripes, geometric designs, any repetitive design on the pillow.
- Texture – Thick stitching, leather fabric, velvet fabric, boucle fabric, any 3D elements on the pillow.
This Throw Pillow Combination is one of the easiest ways to achieve all the collected and cozy home vibes! I love styling throw pillow combos with monochromatic color schemes, but also play on the colors within each pillow.
Styling Throw Pillows – Mixing Patterns
Small Pattern + Large Pattern + Solid and/or Texture Throw Pillows
- Small Pattern – Dainty florals, thin stripes, small block patterns, gingham, pin dots, etc.
- Large Pattern – Large scale florals, widespread plaid, widespread stripes, large geometric designs, etc.
- Solid/Texture – Appears to be mainly one color. Can have hints of texture, thick stitching, leather or velvet fabrics.
Mix and Match Patterns have been trending not only in the fashion world, but in today’s home decor! I LOVE a mix and match moment.
One of the easiest ways to achieve a mixed patterns look is to pair one large scale pattern with one small scale pattern. Think dainty florals and thick plaid. Or, a tight gingham pattern paired with an embroidered botanical design.
Throw Pillow Combinations – Fall Florals & Plaid
Floral Pattern + Plaid + Solid and/or Texture Throw Pillows
- Floral Pattern – Dainty florals, leaves/vines, floral block pattern
- Plaid – large scale plaid, small scale plaid, gingham, checkered patterns, grid patterns
- Solid/Texture – Appears to be mainly one color. Can have hints of texture, embroidery, thick stitching, leather or velvet fabrics.
Fall is just around the corner, through the woods, down 30 degrees in temperature… and I cannot wait! I am starting to see more and more stores release some of their fall home decor. Honestly, it’s one of the only things getting me through this extremely hot June in Phoenix…
Florals and plaid will always go hand in hand in my opinion! Help break up the overload of pattern by adding in a third solid colored/textured pillow within the same color family!
